What Is the Difference between Refinishing, Refacing and Resurfacing Kitchen Cabinets?

Your kitchen is the heart of the home. If your cabinets are less than stellar you might be considering replacing them. But wait, if there is an option that was less mess and cost, wouldn’t you want to know? Some say refinishing, some call it refacing. There are a few ways to update your cabinets without replacing them. But what is the difference between refinishing, refacing and resurfacing kitchen cabinets. Our pros in kitchen cabinet refinishing Hamilton can help!

Resurfacing

Resurfacing kitchen cabinets is when your cabinet finish is completely removed and replaced with a new laminate or wood veneer. It easily covers up dings and dents in doors and allows for a complete change in look. Veneers will be less prone to chips but can peel away from the cabinets after time.

Refacing

Refacing and resurfacing are the same. Some companies use the term refacing to mean taking cabinets and replacing the current veneer on them with a new one. Normally this means taking the cabinet doors and measurements, cutting new coverings and adhering them permanently to the doors. You will get a completely different look from the new veneers.

Refinishing

Refinishing is different than resurfacing or refacing. It is taking the wood from the cabinets and sanding or stripping off the current finish. A new color or stain is applied to create the new look. This will also give you a completely different look than when you started.

As a note, if your cabinets are made from thermofoil or laminate now, you cannot refinish them. Because of the way they were designed, you cannot strip the color and add a new one. You must resurface or reface the cabinets.

What to expect

No matter what method you choose to update your cabinets, refinishing takes several days to a week and can cause quite a mess in your kitchen. Just like a full cabinet replacement, you’ll likely not have a usable kitchen while the process is taking place. It will be up to your crew to decide if you need to remove food and kitchenware during the process.
